Waldorf Cake

Cake:
1/2 cup of butter or margarine
1 1/2 cups of sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon of vanilla
2 tablespoons of cocoa
two 1 ounce bottles of red food coloring
2 1/4 cups of sifted flour
1/2 teaspoon of salt
1 cup of buttermilk
1 teaspoon of soda
1 tablespoon of vinegar
Waldorf Icing:
1/2 cup of flour
1 1/2 cups of milk
1 1/2 cups of butter
1 1/2 cups of powdered sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons of vanilla


Cake: Cream the butter and sugar. Add eggs one at a time, add vanilla. Make a paste of cocoa and food coloring, beat into mixture. Combine flour and salt, add to mixture alternately with buttermilk. Blend soda and vinegar and add to batter. Pour into greased and floured 9 inch pans. (Make 4 very thin layers or 2 layers and split to make 4 after cake has cooled.)
Icing: Cook flour and milk over low heat until pastry, cool. Cream sugar and butter, add vanilla and paste. Whip in mixer until like whipped cream. Spread between layers, top and sides
